Wallace Spearmon said he was taking Methylprednisolone as prescribed medication ©Getty ImagesThe United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has suspended sprinter Wallace Spearmon for three months after he tested positive for a banned substance, but ruled it was not used to enhance his performance.

An in-competition urine sample taken at the Edmonton International Track Classic on July 6, found Methylprednisolone in the 29-year-old's system.

Methylprednisolone is a glucocorticosteroid which USADA said is a "specified substance, and therefore the presence of Methylprednisolone in an athlete's sample can result in a reduced sanction".

A spokesperson added: "After a thorough review of the case, including Spearmon's medical records, USADA has accepted Spearmon's explanation that the Methylprednisolone was not being used in an effort to enhance his performance and that he was taking the prescribed medication in a therapeutic dose under the care of a physician."

Spearmon failed to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption prior to using the medication.

His three-month ban began on August 27, the date he accepted a provisional suspension.

Spearmon has also been disqualified from all competitive results obtained on and after July 6, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.

The sprinter previously said he "was not trying to cheat" and had "made a mistake".

He said the drug was administered by his physician, Dr Mark Bonner, to help him deal with seasonal allergies and sinus infections, and was administered on June 10.

It was not detected by a doping test at the USA Championships on June 29, and Spearmon said the increased use of his inhaler before the Edmonton meet may have caused the positive reading.

Spearmon won 200 metres silver at the 2005 World Championships, and bronze in the event in 2007 and 2009.

The American also won 4x100m relay gold at the 2007 Championships in Osaka, Japan.
