Organisers of the new marathon in Bordeaux plan to hold it at night, with the start at sunset ©AFP/Getty ImagesBordeaux, one of the world's wine capitals, is getting into the marathon business.

The city in western France proposes to stage its first marathon on April 18 - and, in an unusual twist, reminiscent of the Singapore motor-racing Grand Prix, it will be a night race.

The organisers hope to attract 7,000 runners, who will be able to choose between entering the full marathon - contested over 42.195 kilometres - a half-marathon, a relay marathon, with teams of four runners, or even a "duo marathon".

Launched last week in the presence of Alain Juppé, the former French Prime Minister who is Mayor of Bordeaux, the race is expected to start at sunset on the banks of the Garonne.

The course is designed to make the most of the city's historical and architectural heritage, taking in Bordeaux-Port de la Lune, Pont de Pierre and Place de la Victoire, as well as passing close to well-known chȃteaux and vineyards.

The finishing-line will be between Place de la Bourse and the Miroir d'Eau.

It is promised that the course will also feature special events and live music.
