The event will feature 30 races – including for children, families, and adults – taking place from The Mall and finishing in front of Buckingham Palace.

It will see 5,500 runners filling the iconic stretch of London road to mark the historic achievement on May 6 1954.

The British Athletics One-Mile Road Championship, for all age groups and wheelchair athletes, will be held during the day on May 24, while six-times Paralympic champion David Weir compete in the Senior Wheelchair Championships.

Weir is aiming to become the first athlete to clock a sub-three-minute mile:

"It's a huge challenge but I think, given the right condition and with the support of the organisers, a sub-three-minute mile is possible," said the Briton.

"My PB [personal best] for the mile on the track is 3min 16sec so I need a big improvement on that. I did 3:09 on this course last year."

Sir Roger Bannister, who will award the winner of the Senior Men's Championship their trophy - which has been newly commissioned as the Sir Roger Bannister trophy - has expressed his desire to get back on the track.

"I wish I'd had a track like this s to run on," he said.

"This mile has a wonderful symmetry as a race, neither too short nor too long, and I'm looking forward very much to being involved with this event."

He set the world's first sub four-minute mile at Iffley Road track in Oxford.
