Suresh KalmadiJuly 29 - Suresh Kalmadi has been replaced on the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) ruling Council after losing his position as head of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA).

The controversial Indian, currently on bail after spending 10 months in jail for his alleged involvement in corruption linked to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, was beaten in the election for President earlier this month by Qatar's Dahlan Jumaan Al-Hamad.

Al-Hamad is already a member of the IAAF Council, where he is one four vice-presidents alongside Ukraine's Sergey Bubka, Britain's Sebastian Coe and America's Bob Hersh.

The IAAF have now appointed Du Zhaocai, senior vice-president of the AAA and general secretary of Chinese Athletics Association (CAA), to its Council as one of Asia's representatives.

Du is currently one of the senior Chinese officials overseeing preparations for the 2015 IAAF World Championships, which are due to be held in the Bird's Nest Stadium, where the 2008 Olympics and Paralympics took place.

The appointment is due to be officially confirmed at the IAAF Congress in Moscow next week on the eve of the World Championships in the Russian capital.

The 69-year-old Kalmadi had sat on the IAAF Council since 2001.

Since leading New Delhi 2010 and being linked with corruption he has lost a number of key roles, including being head of the Indian Olympic Association, which he had led since 1996 until he was forced out in 2011.

Kalmadi, a former Minister of Railways in India, is also currently suspended by the All India Congress Committee, the party he represents in Parliament.
