Australian archery star Tyack leads the field at Oceania Olympic qualifiers
Saturday, 07 January 2012
January 7 - Ryan Tyack (pictured) led the Australian archery squad in dominating at the Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament, held in Masterton, New Zealand. Tyack claimed the men's individual event, scoring 674 points in windy conditions, finishing ahead of compatriot Taylor Worth and Matt Gray.
Alice Ingley, Elisa Barnard and Odette Snazelle also claimed victories in the women's competition to continue Australia's dominance.
Australia will now have at least one competitor in both men's and women's competitions for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
They have a final chance to qualify in the team competition in Ogden, Utah at a World Cup event in June, where the archers selected for London will be finalised.
Coach Jim Park said: "Ryan Tyack's score was particularly good.
"A score of 674 was a world-class effort in those conditions.
"We were the favourites to lock down those Olympic spots, but you've still got to get the job done because surprising things can happen."
Fiji and Samoa also grabbed Olympic spots after finishing fourth in the men's and women's competitions respectively, with the hosts New Zealand opting not to compete.
