It came on a night that saw two golds apiece for the English, New Zealand and Australia.

After six days of world-class swimming action here it was a fitting way to end proceedings as the rivalry between the English and their Southern Hemisphere cousins was perfectly played out in the final race.

England's Chris Walker-Hebborn and Australian Mitch Larkin had negotiated the first 100m virtually stroke-for-stroke before Adam Peaty and Adam Brown gave the English a sizeable lead in the second and third legs.

Another Adam, this time Barrett, soared like a salmon into the water to take on the final run.

But the imposing presence of James Magnussen was chasing him down and, following the final turn for home, the Australian began eating into the English lead as everyone rose to their feet.

Amid deafening noise Barratt pumped and kicked like never before to touch home and break the Games record.

Their time of 3mins 31:51sec took almost two seconds off that set by Australia in 2010.

Leith Shankland led South Africa home in a distant third.

It was a role reversal in the women's 4x100m medley relay and this time it was England's Fran Halsall doing the chasing as she tried in vain to catch Australia's Cate Campbell on the last leg.

But the Australian touched home in a Games record 3:56:23.

Unusually, it took the Australians until the fourth race of the night to register their first win as Daniel Tranter took gold in the men's 200m individual medley, breaking the Games record of England's Delhi 2010 champion James Goddard in a time of 1:57:83.

Daniel Wallace came into the arena clad in his kilt to a raucous reception and he did not disappoint, taking silver and Scotland's only medal on the night with South Africa's Chad le Clos in third.

England's Benjamin Proud continued his rise to prominence as he claimed his second gold medal at Glasgow 2014, powering to victory in the men's 50m freestyle to add to his 50m breaststroke win from Friday night.

The 19-year-old's performance was all the more impressive considering he beat off the challenge of wily Australian duo Cameron McEvoy and Magnussen.

New Zealand's Lauren Boyle put in a storming last 100m to take the women's 400m freestyle gold, breaking Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington's Games record of 4:05:68 in the process.

She touched home in a time of 4:04:47 ahead of Jazz Carlin of Wales and Australian Bronte Barratt.

England's Adlington looked suitably impressed as she looked on from her commentary position.

Carlin added to her gold in the 800m freestyle last night while team mate Georgia Davies claimed her very own gold medal and Games record in the women's 50m backstroke.

It was also the 23-year-old's second medal at Glasgow 2014 after her second place finish in the 100m backstroke earlier in the competition.

The Welsh wizard took gold in 27:56 to finish clear of England's Lauren Quigley in second and Canadian Brooklyn Snodgrass in third.

Six-time Paralympic and world champion Sophie Pascoe claimed her second gold medal of the Games - and New Zealand's second on the night - after an awesome performance in the women's Para-sport 200m individual medley SM10 added to Boyle's win.

She was just under four seconds clear of silver medal winner Katherine Downie of Australia, while Aurelie Rivard of Canada claimed bronze.

Pascoe was still well outside her world record of 2:25:65 set on her way to gold at London 2012.

An awesome performance from defending champion Ryan Cochrane of Canada saw him retain his 1,500m freestyle title finishing over four seconds clear of Australian Mack Horton in a time of 14:44:03.

Both men were streaks ahead of the rest at the midway point and it was a straight battle between the two but Cochrane showed his power and endurance by pulling away from Horton over the final 200m.

Wales' Daniel Jervis became an honorary Scot for the final 50m as the crowd roared him on in his battle for bronze with Jordan Harrison and that extra support seemed to make all the difference as he touched home just ahead of the chasing Aussie.

Just as they did in Delhi, Australia finish top of the overall swimming medal table with 57 in total including 19 gold, 21 silver and 17 bronze.

England are next with 28 that is made up of 10 gold and silver as well as eight bronze while Canada sit third with four gold, one silver and six bronze for a total of 11.
