The Tollcross Centre was also the setting for the Scottish Swimming Championships and British Swimming Championships earlier month, the qualification events for Team Scotland competitors.

Leading the Scottish medal charge in Glasgow will be Olympic and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Michael Jamieson, although the 25-year-old, a silver medallist in 200 metres breaststroke at London 2012, did not have it all his own way in Glasgow this month.

Twenty-year-old Ross Murdoch announced his arrival on the scene in spectacular fashion by overcoming Jamieson in the Scottish and British 100m finals, setting a record time of 59.56sec, while also taking the Scottish 50m title and claiming silver in the 200m, along with another silver in the British 50m final.

Triple Commonwealth Youth Games gold medallist Craig Benson is another who will be keen to put on a show for home fans after securing his place in the squad at the British Championships, impressing in the 100m breaststroke.

Twelve of the squad named today have competed at the Commonwealth Games before, including double gold medallist from Melbourne 2006, Caitlin McClatchey, who ensured her third Games appearance in the 200m freestyle.

Defending men's 200m freestyle champion Robbie Renwick and reigning women's 400m individual medley gold medallist Hannah Miley will also be making their third outing at a Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which is due to take place from July 23 to August 3.

"I am delighted to announce the biggest aquatics team we have ever selected for a Commonwealth Games and at this stage it is the biggest single sport in Team Scotland for 2014," said Team Scotland Chef de Mission Jon Doig.

"Whilst there is a strong core of experience and success at the highest level, I am also excited to see so many new faces on the team who have been inspired to achieve their best in a quest to be part of Team Scotland at a home Games.

"With only 98 days left until the start of Glasgow 2014, I wish all of them the very best with their final preparations and look forward to another successful Games in the pool for Scotland this summer."

Swimming and diving have provided Scotland with the most medals from any sports at the Commonwealth Games totalling 73, 20 of which are gold.

Three of those gold medals were won by the legendary diver Sir Peter Heatly, and the man who turns 90-years-old just days before the start of the Games will be cheering on his 16-year-old grandson James Heatly, who will join Grace Reid as the two divers in the squad.

Reid, Scotland's youngest ever team member when she competed in Delhi 2010 at just 14 years of age, will make her second Games appearance in the one metre springboard event.

Scottish Minister for Sport and Commonwealth Games Minister, Shona Robison, congratulated the athletes named to the squad, adding: "It is just reward for all the hard work and commitment these athletes have put in day in and day out in the pool.

"I am also delighted for the coaches and support staff who have played such an important role in supporting their athletes."

There are still a number of places that may be up for grabs for Scottish swimmers who achieve the standard qualifying time in events with available places, while a number of Para-sport swimmers will also be added to the team when the final squad announcement is due to be made on June 12.

Swimming women: Katie Armitage, Kathleen Dawson, Fiona Donnelly, Megan Gilchrist, Sian Harkin, Camilla Hattersley, Lucy Hope, Kathryn Johnstone, Rachel-Louise Masson, Caitlin McClatchey, Hannah Miley, Rachel O'Donnell, Corrie Scott, Andrea Strachan and Aisha Thornton.
