April 8 - South Africa thrashed Scotland at the Aberdeen Aquatics Centre during day four of the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships ©Scottish SwimmingThere was huge disappointment for the home crowd inside the Aberdeen Aquatics Centre tonight as Scotland's women were soundly beaten 23-0 by a rampant South African in their Commonwealth Water Polo Championships clash.

Despite making a promising start to the tournament with a victory over Wales on the opening day, Scotland went down to their second successive heavy defeat after losing 23-3 to Canada on Sunday (April 6)

This time the Scots came up against a ruthless South African side, who regrouped following yesterday's defeat to England.

Two goals each for Tay Schooling, Kelsey White and Kim Kay helped the visitors to a 10-0 halftime lead and they continued to pepper the Scottish goal in the third and fourth quarters to eventually break the 20-goal mark.

Despite vociferous support from the Aberdeen crowd, the home side could not find a way past the South African keeper no matter how hard they tried.

The other women's match of the day saw Canada record their second successive win, led by Emma Wright, who bagged six goals with Amy Yule also impressing for the North Americans.

Such was the Canadians' dominance over Wales that Molly Demers was the only outfield player not to score in the match, missing a penalty in the final quarter as her side ran out 26-3 winners.

On the men's side, England and Malta maintained their 100 per cent records in the tournament so far while New Zealand registered their first win.

With both sides all square at 1-1 during the first quarter, the introduction of Joseph O'Regan, Jake Vincent and Ciaran James swung the game in England's favour as both O'Regan and Vincent found the net to give their side a 5-1 lead over Wales at the end of the first quarter.

Four more goals in the second quarter saw England lead 9-1 at halftime and although they only managed to add another two in the second half, they comfortably saw out the game to join Malta at the top of the table.

The Maltese overcame South Africa in the game of the day, as both sides matched each other throughout the contest.

South Africa took an early 2-0 lead but were hauled back thanks in the main to Michele Stellini and Mark Meli, who kept the Maltese in touch with the sides going in level at halftime five apiece.

Stellini continued to lead the charge in the third and fourth quarters and with four minutes to go his side were two goals to the good, but a Lood Rabie strike reduced the deficit to a single goal with one minute left on the clock.

Nic Mollyneux had the chance to draw the game level at 9-9 with seconds to go but a superb save by Malta's keeper Borg Cole preserved his side's 100 per cent record.

The first game of the day saw New Zealand and Singapore looking to register their first points of the tournament.

In truth, the Kiwis never looked in any danger after strikes from Owen Chambers, Matt Lewis and Tyler Vao handed them a 6-1 lead at halftime before they continued their dominance winning the third quarter 3-1.

Singapore struggled to get any meaningful possession throughout and despite bagging two goals in the final period; Chambers completed his hatrick late on to help his side to a comfortable 13-5 win.

Competition in Aberdeen is due to continue until Saturday (April 12).
