March 2 - The Rio 2016 Water Polo Olympic Qualification Tournaments will take place in Italy and the Netherlands ©Getty Images Host cities for a series of Junior World Championship events in 2015 and 2016, as well as the destinations for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games water polo qualification tournaments, have been announced today by the International Aquatics Federation (FINA). 


The Italian city of Florence will stage the 2016 men's Water Polo Olympic Games Qualification Tournament, while the Netherlands will host the women's event at a venue yet to be decided.

Italy will also play host to the FINA men's Water Polo World League Super Final next year, with Bergamo or capital Rome set to be the host city.

Budva in Montenegro will be the setting for the men's World Youth Water Polo Championships in 2016, with Auckland set to welcome the women's event, both competitions are for athletes aged 18-years-old and under.

Perth in Austrlia hosted the inaugural men's and women's World Youth Water Polo Championships in 2012, while this year will see Istanbul is due to stage the men's event from August 2 to 10, while the women's tournament will take place from August 25 to 31 in Madrid.

Guadalajara in Mexico has been granted hosting rights to four World Championships, the first of which will be the women's World Junior Water Polo Championships in 2015.

That will be followed by the World Junior Diving Championships, World Junior Synchronised Swimming Championships and World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships, all due to take place in 2016.

This year's diving Championships will be held in Penza, Russia, from September 9 to 14, with the synchronised swimming Championships scheduled for Helsinki from July 30 to August 3.

Eilat in Israel will host the second ever open water event, from August 28 to 30.

The awarding of the Championships were announced following a meeting of the ruling FINA Bureau in Cancun this weekend which followed the two-day World Water Polo Conference in the Mexican resort.

The dates for the 2015 and 2016 events have yet to be finalised.

The news will come as a further boost to the Mexican Swimming Federation after FINA already awarded Guadalajara the 17th FINA World Championships in 2017.

That announcement was made during the governing body's General Congress in Shanghai in 2011, which also saw Russian city Kazan unveiled as hosts for the next World Championships in 2015.
