The Kazakhstani athlete returned an "adverse analytical finding" for Acetazolamide in an out-of-competition urine sample given on December 5 At the IPC Nordic Skiing World Cup in Canmore, Canada.

The substance is on the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC) prohibited list and is banned both in and out of competition.

A spokesman for the IPC said: "Petrenko was taking a prescribed medication in a therapeutic dose under the care of a physician, however, failed to obtain a Therapeutic Use Exemption in advance of the test as required by the rules."

The spokesman added: "As a signatory of the WADC, the IPC remains committed to a doping free sporting environment at all levels.

"The IPC, together with the International Federations and the National Paralympic Committees, established the IPC Anti-Doping Code to prevent doping in sport for Paralympic athletes, in the spirit of fair play.

"The IPC Anti-Doping Code is in conformity with the general principles of the WADC."

It is not yet known if Petrenko will be competing at the Sochi Winter Paralympics, which is due to begin on March 7, with Kazakhstan still to officially announce their team.
