Alcott, winner of the Australian Open in January, has only been competing in the quad competition since last year and he ensured he got the better of world number one Wagner with a closely-fought 7-5, 7-6 win.

The victory for the 24-year-old Paralympic wheelchair basketball gold medallist stretched his unbeaten run to 16 matches, ending the American's hopes of an eighth Pensacola Open title.

Elsewhere on a packed penultimate day, defending champion Gordon Reid of Britain booked his place in the men's singles final by virtue of a relatively comfortable 6-3, 6-4 win over Frenchman Nicolas Peifer.

Reid will now meet world number seven Maikel Scheffers of The Netherlands after the Dutchman came from behind to beat the tournament's surprise package in Sweden's Stefan Olsson 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

It proved to be a successful day for the British players in particular as Reid, alongside Belgium's Joachim Gerard, clinched their first men's doubles crown together with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 success against French second seeds Peifer and Michael Jeremiasz.

In the women's singles, Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis remains on course to defend her title after she recovered from a set down to beat Britain's Jordanne Whiley 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Buis however will have to overcome German top seed Sabine Ellerbrock if she is to reign supreme in Florida once again, who also endured a tough contest with as she edged past world number 10 Lucy Shuker with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

The British pair put their disappointment in the singles behind them as they teamed up to win the women's doubles event with a thrilling 7-6, 7-6 success over Buis and her compatriot Michaela Spaanstra.

The event in Florida concludes tomorrow with the women's singles and men's singles finals.
