Marc McCarroll and David Phillipson also secured wins in the men's singles competition, while Lucy Shuker and Louise Hunt overcame their opponents in the women's event.

British number one Reid got his challenge for a second Super Series title of the year off to a perfect start by not dropping a single game on his way to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Canada's Philippe Bedard.

The Scot will now take on Sweden's Stefan Olsson in the next round after he secured a surprise victory over Frenchman Frederic Cattaneo 6-4, 6-4.

"It was a good start and I didn't have to do anything too special to win today, but Stefan's going to be a tougher opponent," said world number three Reid.

"He's on his way back into the sport after a break and is a good player, but I've beaten him the last four times we've played, including here at the British Open in 2012 and then the London 2012 Paralympics."

Local player Phillipson secured a popular win over Pole Jerzy Kulik, while McCarroll came out on top 6-2, 6-0 in a battle with compatriot Dermot Bailey.

However, elsewhere in the singles there was not such good news for the British players as world number one Shingo Kunieda outclassed Steve Crompton 6-0, 6-0, while reigning champion Joachim Gerard of Belgium saw off the challenge of Paul Stewart 6-0, 6-1.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Alfie Hewitt could not match the experience and skill of world number two Stephane Houdet as he went down 6-0, 6-2 to the Frenchman.

In the men's quads competition, Ian Payne continued the British success with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sophie Fraioli of France, while Israel's Patrick Ben Uriel and Alberto Corradi of Italy also made it through to the next stage.

On the women's side, Shuker defeated Russia's Viktoriia Lvova 6-2, 6-1, while another all-British affair saw Hunt emerge on the right side of a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of Debbie Brazier.

"I had a solid start today against a very good opponent," said Shuker, who is ranked 10 in the world.

"She's the world number one junior and hits a very good ball, but I played sensible tennis and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the week and the challenges ahead."

Charlotte Famin of France overcame Kaitlyn Verfuerth of the United States in the only match of the day that went to three sets, coming away with a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 win.

The British Open is the fifth of six tournaments on the Super Series tour and is due to conclude on Sunday (July 20).
