Italy also secured their passage to the next stage with a resounding 70-37 win over Colombia as the second group stage of the Championships, taking place at the Songnim Gymnasium and the Samsan World Sports Complex, continue in the South Korea city.

Italy sit atop Group F after two wins, on points difference from reigning champions Australia, who secured a fifth-straight victory overall against Turkey.

But they were made to fight all the way by a determined Turkish side, who led 28-24 at the midway point before a resurgent Australia outscored their opponents by 10 points in the third quarter to establish a decisive lead before going on to see out the game 63-58.

The other game in the group saw the United States return to winning ways after going down to a surprise defeat to the Italians yesterday.

The US put themselves in pole position to claim a quarter-final place with an impressive 88-48 win over Germany which saw the Americans score 20 points or more in each quarter.

Meanwhile in Group E, Spain and Britain lead the way as both nations made it five-from-five.

Hosts South Korea had raised the possibility of inflicting a first defeat on the Spanish as they led at halftime but a strong second half showing saw the European outfit secure a 57-49 win to leave them top of the group on points difference.

They will be joined in the quarter-finals by a British side who continue to impress with their latest victory coming against Japan.

The British victory was built on a superb first half showing led by Gaz Choudhry, who scored 21 points to help his side to a hefty 18 point lead at the break.

Despite a strong showing by the hosts in the third quarter, Britain maintained their superiority to run out 65-47 winners to set-up a group decider against Spain tomorrow.

"It was a good performance today," said British head coach Haj Bhania.

"We struggled at the start, our starters got us going early on but we've played Japan so many times in the run up to this tournament, we thought that they'd cause us problems and they changed things.

"They came back and took the lead but we put our press on and they did the job.

"Defensively we were fantastic.

"Tomorrow's game will be tough, Spain are such a good team and it's really difficult to play them.

"I think they will come out and really want to win.

"It's a really difficult game to call.

"We need to prepare well for it and go out there, stick to our game plan, and we will be in with a chance."

Sweden defeated The Netherlands 79-73, while Mexico grabbed their second victory of the tournament with a 55-44 win over Algeria in Group G which will decide the final placings from 12th to 16th.
