Defending champions the United States, Paralympic gold medallists Germany, The Netherlands and hosts Canada, meanwhile, all recorded their second wins of the tournament.

Australia went down to a surprise defeat to the US in their opening Group A encounter yesterday but got back on track with a scintillating display against Peru.

The Peruvians were soundly beaten 89-5 by The Netherlands yesterday and suffered another heavy defeat as the Australians recorded a 90-10 victory.

Kathleen O'Kelly-Kennedy was the leading scorer for the Gliders with a match-high 25 points.

Rebecca Murray and Gail Gaeng were the star performers for the US as they continued their fine start with another win against Mexico.

Murray contributed 26 points, while Gaeng registered 11 points and five assists to help their side to a 64-29 win over the Mexicans whose Floralia Estrada impressed with 19 points.

London 2012 bronze medallists The Netherlands led France by 19 points at half-time in their match and after the break restricted their opponents to just 10 more points, while at the other end they kept the score board ticking over at a considerable rate with 30 points from Mariska Beijer contributing to a 77-21 win.

In Group B, the Germans followed up their opening day win over China with a well-deserved victory against Great Britain, who had begun their campaign with a win over Brazil.

A relatively tight first half had the London 2012 champions ahead by 13 points but they showed their class in the second two quarters by stretching their lead throughout to finish with 55-33 victory.

With 26 points, Gesche Schunemann was the main points scorer while Marina Mohnen finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

China recovered from their opening-day defeat to come out on top in their battle with Asian rivals Japan.

Despite holding a three-point lead at the break, the Japanese could not prevent a determined Chinese side from fighting their way back into a seven point lead by the end of the third quarter.

China carried that momentum into the final period to secure a 61-55 win with Yong Qing Fu and Jiameng Dai starring, bagging 29 points and 16 points respectively.

Chinese head coach Yan Han was delighted with the win but was not happy with his side's defensive showing.

"Defence is an important aspect that we must work on," Han said.

"Against a tough opponent, we will need to employ different strategies and try different techniques."

Japan's second defeat of the tournament already has them struggling at the bottom of Group B.

There are no such worries for hosts Canada, as they followed up that win over the Japanese with a 63-25 trouncing of Brazil to delight the home fans.

Janet McLachlan was the scorer-in-chief for the hosts with a game-high 21 points and she was ably assisted by Cindy Ouellet and Arinn Young who notched 11 points and 10 points respectively.
