This time the winning margin was just one point less as the team in white won 57-44 to set up a final meeting with Sweden, who had seen off the challenge of Australia in the other semi-final on a scoreline of 69-58.

The Swedes succumbed to the Germans in what was a thrilling gold medal match by  69-65 to become only the third side to take the under-23 title following double winners Canada and the United States.

In the bronze medal match, Commonwealth rivals Britain and Australia battled it out and it was 1997 bronze medallists Australia who secured another third place finish with a pulsating 54-52 win.
