A special wheelchair basketball programme has been set up by Germany's Horst FrantzensAugust 13 - Uganda's fledging wheelchair basketball programme has been receiving help from Germany with the aim of helping the sport establish itself in the East African country.

Wheelchair basketball was only introduced in 2007 and is slowly being rolled out across Uganda, thanks to the assistance of Germany, who have been providing both financial and practical support.

"Now that we have German support, referees and coaches,we hope that we shall be able to run tournaments with our own,as well as run the national league," said Dennis Akena, President Uganda Wheelchair Basketball Association.

At a special workshop earlier this month more than 40 potential players, coaches and referees from all over Uganda turned up to be introduced to wheelchair basketball.

"I have done my best to cover each need,so far everybody has got the techniques, although they need more experience," said Horst Frantzens, the German who has been leading the project.
