Russia and Great Britain also had good days in the pool at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Stadium but it was the Ukrainians who dominated.

Andrii Derevinskyi got the yellow and blue machine rolling with his second gold medal of the Championships by taking victory in the men's 200 metres freestyle S4.

This was quickly followed by a third gold of the week for Hennadii Boiko in the men's 50m backstroke S1.

Yevheniy Bohodayko also made it a hat-trick of wins as he touched home first in the men's 100m freestyle S7, while Serhii Palamarchuk secured a second world title with his 50m backstroke S2 victory.

Denis Dubrov was the winner in the men's 200m individual medley SM10 and Dmytro Vynohradets won his fourth gold of the competition in the men's 50m backstroke S3, finishing almost three seconds ahead of Spain's Miguel Martinez and Sweden's Mikael Frederiksson.

Ukraine were less dominant in the women's events but still managed two gold medals thanks to Ganna Ielisavetska, winner in the 50m backstroke S2, and Yelvzaveta Mereshko, who overcame Britain's Paralympic  and world champion Eleanor Simmonds of Great Britain to take the 100m freestyle S6 crown in a European record 1min 14:49sec.

"I hate losing," said a disappointed Simmonds.

"But it's great to have competition.

"It's great for the sport and my classification and helps me move my times on even more."

Ukraine ended the fifth day of action by also taking the men's and women's 4x50m medley relay 20points races.

"I think I can get faster so I'm just going to go home and continue to work hard with my coach."

The women's 100m freestyle S7 crown went to Susannah Rodgers, who led from the gun, while Amy Marren led home a British one-two with victory in the women's 200m individual medley SM9 ahead of Stephanie Millward with bronze going to Spaniard Sarai Gascon.
