Paralympic and world champion Vladykina had looked like she was set for glory as she led by more than a second on the turn, but a sensational last 50m by Cashmore saw her reel in the Russian with both finishing in a time of 1min 20.93sec.

"I really wish I was just that one tiny little bit faster," said 26-year-old Cashmore, who finished behind the Russian at both London 2012 and last year's IPC World Championships in Montreal.

Vladykina's was one of seven gold medals secured by Russian swimmers in the Pieter van den Hoogenband Stadium.

Dmitrii Kokarev held off a late challenge from Ukrainian rival Serhii Palarmarchuk in the men's 100m breaststroke S2, setting a world record of 2:07:63 in the process, with Aristeidis Makrodimitris of Greece taking bronze.

In the men's 50m freestyle S11, Alexander Chekurov overcame Ukraine's Viktor Smrynov and Oleksandr Mashchenko, while Andriy Gladkov also beat two Ukrainians, Yevheniy Bohoydayko and Marian Kvasnytsia, in the men's 100m backstroke S7.

Russia's Dmitry Bartasinskiy collected the European crown in the men's 400m S10 with a European record of 4:06.14 ahead of Briton Robert Welbourn and bronze medallist Patryk Karlinski of Poland.

"I think could swim faster," said Bartasinskiy.

"It's a really hard distance.

"All that counts is that I won gold."

In the women's 50m freestyle S13, Russia's Anna Krivshina was crowned European champion ahead of Poland's Joanna Mendak and German Elena Krawzow.

While it was a golden night for the Russians, Ukraine continued its overall dominance with four more gold medals that included a world record.

Ganna Ielisavetska broke the record in the women's 100m backstroke S2 event, touching home in 2:16.31 ahead of compatriot Iryna Sotska, who was followed by Norway's Ingrid Thurmen.

Maksym Veraksa won his first European gold finishing clear of Azerbaijan's Dzmitry Salei and Russia's Alexander Nevolin-Svetov in the men's 50m freestyle S12.

Ukraine also took the honours in both the men's and women's 4x50m relay 20 points, finishing ahead of Spain and Russia, and Norway and Russia respectively.

"I'm just so shocked to be honest," Simmonds said.

"I thought I was dead yesterday after my two PBs (personal bests) and I was pushed all the way."

Simmonds was joined on top of the podium by compatriot Sascha Kindred, who claimed the men's 200m individual SM6 in a European record of 2:40.82 ,with Ukraine's Iaroslav Semenenko taking silver and bronze going to Israel's Yoav Valinsky.

France's reigning Paralympic, world and European champion Elodie Lorandi took gold in the women's 400m freestyle S10, while German Kirsten Bruhn sealed her seventh European title with a win in the 100m backstroke S7.
