Following a strong gold medal haul on the opening day of action at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium, Ukrainian athletes continued their perilous form today, with Hennadii Boiko, Dmytro Vynohradets, Dmytro Zalevskyy, Yevheniy Bohodayko and Oksana Khrul all adding to the Ukrainian gold tally.

Leading the surge was Boiko as he added to his 100 metre S1 freestyle gold on the opening day of action, with gold in the men's 50m S1 freestyle.

The 40-year-old Paralympic champion clocked a time of 1 min 09.84sec to finish well clear of Israel's Itzhak Mamistavlov and his compatriot Anton Kol in second and third respectively.

World champion Vynohradets also completed the sprint double as he notched a time of 49.51 to seal gold in the men's 50m S3 freestyle ahead of Greece's Ioannis Kostakis and Spain's Miguel Martinez.

A Ukrainian podium sweep in the men's 100m S11 backstroke saw Zalevskyy swim home in 1:08.68 to finish ahead of compatriots Victor Smyrnov and Oleksandr Mashchenko.

Further Ukrainian success came in the men's 50m S7 freestyle ,where double Paralympic champion Bohodayko just edged Great Britain's Matthew Walker and Russia's Sergey Sukharev with a time of 27.93.

Khrul claimed the only Ukrainian gold on the women's side of competition as she added a European 50m S6 butterfly title to the Paralympic gold she won at London 2012.

Despite smashing the men's 50m S2 freestyle world record with a time of 58.43, nine-time world champion Dmitrii Kokarev could not retain Russia's spot ahead of Great Britain in the medal table as the nation slid down the standings into third.

On the back of a successful Commonwealth Games campaign, British athletes sealed five titles in the pool today to add to the three won on the first day of competition.

World and Commonwealth champion Oliver Hynd retained his European crown in the men's 400m S8 freestyle as he headed off a challenge by Russia's Denis Tarasov to finish in 4:31.66, while Hynd's team mate Josef Craig claimed bronze.

"I'm really happy to be here and to get to swim my races," said Hynd.

"I'm really happy with the outcome.

"I stuck to my race plan and it all went well.

"The 200m medley tomorrow is my best race, so hopefully I can have some more success there."

Susannah Rogers added a second gold of the Championships after leading home the German duo of Denise Grahl and Kirsten Bruhn in the women's 50m S7 freestyle, while Hannah Russell celebrated her 18th birthday in style with gold in the women's S12 100m backstroke.

Russell's time of 1:08.29 was enough to beat Russia's Darya Stukalova and Russia's Paralympic champion Oxana Savchenko

Stephanie Millward got the better of team mate Amy Warren in the women's 400m S9 freestyle as she secured gold in a time of 4:41.99.

Spain's Nuriia Marques was third.

The fifth and final British gold came courtesy of Sascha Kindred as he won a 12th European title in the men's 50m butterfly S6, to cap off a superb day in the pool for Britain.

Russia's Sergey Klyagin and Germany's Sebastian Iwanow picked up silver and bronze respectively.
