A total of 379 athletes from 38 countries descended on the Spanish city for two days of competition.

Will Groulx, Jamie Whitmore and Alicia Dana all came away with two golds apiece while, Will Lachenauer, Allison Jones and Shawn Morelli took one gold each for the US.

Groulx, winner of a wheelchair rugby gold for the US at Beijing 2008, claimed a double in the men's H2 time trial and road race events while Dana took the women's H2 titles.

Whitmore, who set world records in the time trial and pursuit disciplines on her way to taking gold at the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Mexico earlier this year, completed the double in the women's C3 class.

Lachenauer powered to success in the men's H2 time trial with the road race gold going Italian Vittorio Podesta while Morelli's triumph came in the women's C4 time trial as the road race gold went to Susan Powell of Australia.

Germany emerged as the leading nation in terms of overall medals with 17, while Italy where next with 11.

Six of Germany's medal haul were gold, including four-time Olympic champion Andrea Eskau's double in the women's H5 category while Hans-Peter Durst took both titles in the men's T2.

Pierre Senska was victorious in the men's C1 road race and Vico Merkelin was the man in the H4 road race.

London 2012 champion Alex Zanardi was denied a double in the H5 class as he lost out to Dutchman Tim de Vries in the time trial but came back to take the road race crown.

"I wasn't happy with the time trial but I made up for it afterwards," said the 47-year-old two-time Paralympic champion.

"The overall level is getting higher and higher.

"It gives us an idea of what it will be like at the World Championships."

Zanardi partnered Podesta and Luca Mazzone to the team relay gold however as they finished ahead of the US and Belgium.

Meanwhile, there were also time trial and road race wins for Lee Seung-Mi of South Korea in the women's H4 class while Great Britain's Laura Turnham and guide Corrine Hall took the tandem B road race and time trial gold medals.

On the men's side Quentin Aubague also dominated both of his disciplines in the T1 class.

Attention now turns to the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championship due to take place in Greenville in the US from August 28 to September 1.
