The London 2012 star, a silver medallist in the C5 individual pursuit, one kilometre time-trial and team sprint, is due to receive the honour on April 5 at the Park Plaza Hotel in Westminster, London.

The awards are designed to raise awareness of the plight of servicemen and women and raise funds for the injured and the families who support them.

Before his successes on the track, Butterworth was a Royal Air Force (RAF) technician.

On August 4, 2007, he was involved in a rocket attack on Basra Air Station, Iraq, resulting in the loss of his left arm.

Following intense rehabilitation at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre in Surrey, he was spotted by British Cycling coaches at a "Battle Back" Paralympics GB talent ID day in Loughborough.

From here he accepted a contract with the GB Paralympic Development Squad in 2009 and has not looked back since.

Early success at the 2010 and 2011 National Championships led him to the 2012 World Track Championships in Los Angeles where he secured gold in the C5 1km time trial in a world record time, followed by his remarkable performance at the London 2012 Games.

A spokesperson for the Soldering on Awards called Butterworth was an "inspiration to everybody".

Adding: "A decade on since joining the RAF, who would have guessed this young man would end up as a Paralympic star?"

Butterworth was nominated for the Sporting Endeavour award by the RAF Association, which gave him £4,500 ($7,450/€5,360) a year in sponsorship.
