The four-day competition is due to start on April 10 at the Bicentenary Velodrome in the centre of the country at an altitude of 1,887 metres.

With two velodromes, Aguascalientes will be an experienced host, with a leg of the track World Cup held there in 2013 for the second consecutive year, while in May the 250 metre track also welcomed a national Para-athletics event.

With Para-World Championships only occurring on the road in 2013 the event will offer a major chance for top track stars, including Britain's Dame Sarah Storey, to hone their form two years ahead of Rio 2016.

There had been criticism from some quarters over the lack of major track events on the calendar between London 2012 and Rio 2016 but the awarding of the Championships goes someway to rectifying this.

This opportunity was acknowledged by UCI President Brian Cookson when he welcomed the choice of host:

"With UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships already awarded to Greenville, I am delighted to say that we have now a full, robust and exciting calendar for Para-cycling in 2014," he said.

"We had several organisers interested in hosting the 2014 Para-cycling Track World Championships and I would like to thank them all.

"Congratulations to Aguascalientes and Mexico which have already demonstrated their ability to host major international events."
