Paralympic champion Johanna Benson has been honoured by having a street renamed after herOctober 15 - A street in Walvis Bay has been renamed after Namibia's Paralympic gold medallist Johanna Benson.

Johanna Benson Street was officially unveiled yesterday as Fiskaal Street in the city's suburb of Kuisebmond was renamed in honour of the London 2012 T37 200 metres gold medallist.

The event was attended by Namibia's Minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, Jerry Ekandjo, who delivered a special message on behalf of the country's President Hifikepunye Pohamba.

Other guests included regional and local authority politicians, and private sector leaders.

Benson also officially took ownership of a house the Namibian Government constructed for her in Walvis Bay's Fairways estate, in recognition of her London 2012 achievement, where she became the first Namibian female athlete to win a medal at a Paralympics, and also the first athlete from the country to win a gold medal.

In his address, Pohamba hailed Benson as an exceptional role model for all Namibians.

"I have no doubt that her hard work and determination have inspired many Namibians into believing in themselves and in their own abilities," he said.

The decision by the Municipality of Walvis Bay to honour Benson by naming the street where she grew up was also applauded by Pohamba.

It is the latest honour for Benson, who also won a silver medal in the T37 100m at London 2012.

She was given N$170 000 (£11,000/$17,000/€12,500) in cash and also granted a diplomatic passport by the Namibian Government, while a foundation to find new young talent was set-up in her name.

"Being a public figure comes with many responsibilities," said Pohamba.

"In this context I urge you to remain humble and never to forget where you come from.

"Remember at all times that you are now a role model to the youth, especially those living with disabilities."
