David WeirOctober 19 - Wheelchair racing star Dave Weir has secured another major victory this year after he was voted 2012 British Paralympic Athlete of the Year by fans across the country.

The 33-year-old proved one of the stars of the London 2012 Paralympic Games as he secured a stunning four gold medals with victories in the T54 800, 1,500 and 5,000 metres, as well as the marathon.

The Londoner claimed the award as he collected 48 per cent of the votes to narrowly beat double Paralympic gold medallist Hannah Cockroft to the prize.

"It's a great honour to have been voted British Paralympic Athlete of the Year, especially considering that Great Britain had a number of athletes that won gold medals and performed so well in London," Weir said.

"It's been such a great year for me and my success at the Paralympics is something that I will always remember.

"To have my performances recognised by athletics fans across the country is a great way to end the year."

The quadruple success at London 2012 marks undoubtedly Weir's finest ever year after he raced to a record-equalling sixth Virgin London Marathon crown in April.

The four golds he took this summer also add to the two he claimed at the Beijing 2008 Paralympics, giving him an overall tally of six Paralympic gold medals.
