A new tournament to promote powerchair hockey has been launched ©IWAS/FacebookPowerchair hockey, which is being heavily promoted by the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) in a bid to help it gain a place in the Paralympics, is set to to receive another boost.

It has been announced that the first IWAS Cup for Powerchair Hockey is to be held later this year.

The event will take place in conjunction with the IWAS World Junior Games 2015, due to take place in Stadskanaal, The Netherlands, between July 2 and 8.

The tournament is a bid to showcase the growing and dynamic sport to a new audience and provides an opportunity for teams to compete at an official level, IWAS officials claim.

"By demonstrating at this event it will also offer the opportunity to promote the sport to a new audience," said Niels ten Hagen, the sport's officer for competition, events and development.

"It not only offers great potential to find new national teams in countries where the sport is unknown or underdeveloped but also the possibility to attract new players to current teams.

"And ultimately it may be a step closer to the ultimate goal, participating at the Paralympics."
