Bryce, the first female Governor-General of Australia, travelled to the Paralympics to show her full support for the Australian team, who finished fifth on the medal table with 85 medals, 32 of which were gold.

Hartung, who is also vice-president of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), praised the support that Bryce offered Australian's Paralympians at London 2012.

"The Governor-General, Quentin Bryce, was very generous in her support for the team," said Hartung, who made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Australia Day Honours last week for his distinguished service to the Paralympic Movement.

"She travelled from venue to venue, adding her voice to the Australian supporters in the stands as they cheered on our athletes."

The Governor-General was present during the Australian team's official welcome ceremony to the Athletes' Village and attended the London 2012 Paralympic Opening Ceremony.


She also met many of the Australian athletes and team staff and also visited the offices and accommodation.

Hartung also praised the role played by Government in the development of Paralympic sport and the practical support offered by its representatives in London.
