Cab app_logoJuly 12 - WheelPower, the National Disability Sports Charity, have joined forces with cab:app, a smartphone application, to improve access for disabled people using black cabs in London during the Paralympic Games.

The partnership will see cab:app add a wheelchair assistance button to its electronic taxi hailing app, encouraging wheelchair users and disabled people to take advantage of the large amount of space and availability of access ramps in black cabs this summer.

To celebrate the partnership, a competition to design a wheelchair and disabled assistance button for the app has been launched.

The design must be an iconic and eye-catching so that it is easily recognisable to both drivers and passengers.

In addition to seeing their design integrated within the cab:app interface, the winner will also win an all expenses paid trip for two to London which includes a two-night stay at the Belgraves-Thompson hotel, a dinner for two at HIX restaurant, a London Eye champagne experience for two and a guided tour of London by night.

The winning design will be chosen by WheelPower ambassador, wheelchair racer Nikki Emerson.

"We are delighted that cab:app is supporting WheelPower's work to transform the lives of disabled people," said Paul Rushton head of fundraising at WheelPower.

"By providing disabled people with a simple, fast and easy to use mobile phone app to hail black cabs, cab:app is transforming access to transport for many disabled people."

cab:app will also donate £1 ($1.55/€1.27) from every cab:app journey taken during the Paralympic Games to WheelPower.

After the London 2012 Paralympics, cab:app and WheelPower hope to promote black cab travel to disabled passengers as a long term initiative.
