The National Paralympic Committee of Nicaragua has elected David Isaac Lopez Sevilla as its new President ©NPC of NicaraguaThe National Paralympic Committee of Nicaragua has elected David Isaac Lopez Sevilla as its new President to succeed Juan Francisco Balladares Petting, who has taken up the position of treasurer.

Tomas Ramon Hernandez has been appointed vice-president, while Dionicio De Jesus Zeledon Ayala remains secretary general. 

Other Board members who will serve a four-year term through to 2019 include Jairo Leyton, Yader Guillen and Reyna Cruz Hernandez.

Nicaragua made their Paralympic debut at Athens 2004, with their sole representative, wheelchair racer Mario Madriz, competing in the men's 100 metres and 5,000m T54 events.

The nation did not take part at Beijing 2008, but sent two athletes to London 2012 where Gabriel de Jesus Cuadra Holman competed in the men's T36 200m, 400m and 800m, and Vanessa Benavidez Hernandez contested the women's 100m and 200m T11 disciplines.

The largest country in the Central American isthmus is expected to be one of 28 that competes at August's Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games in Canada, having sent five athletes to the 2011 Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Ezequiel Josue Contrera Espinoza, William Alberto Silva Flores, Juan Pablo Garcia Espinoza and Cuadra Holman all competed in men's wheelchair racing, while Oscar Matute participated in powerlifting.

In December, Nicaragua was one of 17 NPCs to take part in coaching and classification workshops in Mexico City, as part of the "Road TO15: Agitos Foundation Sessions".

Held at the Instituto de Desarrollo Deportivo para Especialistas de Alta Competencia and organised by the Agitos Foundation and Toronto 2015 in conjunction with the Mexican Paralympic Committee, the workshops aimed to be a first step to getting individuals involved in Para-sport.
