The facility will be located at the Anella Olímpica, which was the main site for the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, and is scheduled to open in February or March next year, according to Spanish newspaper El Periódico.

The museum is set to be run by Open Camp Europe and will celebrate the history of the Paralympic Movement through a series of exhibits.

It will also aim to show visitors what it is like to be a Paralympic athlete and will allow them to take part in interactive exhibits that will enable them to get close to the experience themselves.

The museum has already garnered the support of a number of firms, including Fundación ONCE, Randstad and Alliance, while the Spanish Paralympic Committee is also said to be backing the project.

It will follow a variety of similar ventures dedicated to the Olympic Movement, including the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, which first opened in 1993 but was re-opened following extensive renovation work in December 2013.
