The Iraq Paralympic Committee is facing budget cuts in the New Year ©Getty ImagesThe Iraq Paralympic Committee is set to end 2014 on a low-point after news that the organisation is facing having its budget slashed as part of nationwide austerity cuts by the Government.

The announcement will mean a reduction in travel for athletes and officiates of the national Paralympic governing body, as well as a cutback in internal and external training camps.

The maximum length stay for athletes at internal pre-competition training camps will be reduced 15 days, while the number of days an athlete can stay at an external training camp will drop to 10 days, or 14 days for countries inside the European Union.

Travel arrangements will also be restricted.

In the future athletes will only be sent to championship events, or ones that will act as a qualifier for major tournaments.

For table tennis players, wheelchair tennis players, archers, wheelchair fencers and shooters further exceptions will be made in order to allow them to compete in competitions that provide ranking points which would move towards Paralympic qualification for Rio 2016. 

These athletes will be given the rights to compete in four events each.

Travel for Committee members will also be restricted, with the exception of President Aqeel Hameed Oudah Al-Oudah.

Iraq finished 12th ovrall at the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon, winning 31 medals including six golds.
