The Army won a total of 26 medals in the water on the third day of action at the Games and it was Elmlinger who led the way, claiming top honours in the women's 50 metres freestyle, 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

The Marines also put in an impressive display, securing 10 gold medals on the day, while the most impressive individual performance came from Air Force Staff Sergeant August O'Neill.

O'Neill took gold in the men's 50m and 100m freestyle, as well as the 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke.

He was also part of the Air Force 200m relay team that powered to gold.

"During the relay race, I thought that we were for sure going to take third," said O'Neill's team mate and retired Senior Airman Timothy Babb.

"Thinking that made me swim even harder, though, and it was amazing to come out of the water and realise that we got the gold."

There was also success for the Army in the wheelchair basketball competition after they overcame the Navy 37-30 to set up a rematch of the 2013 gold medal game with the Marines.

Air Force beat Special Operations 29-12 and will take on the Navy next.

A 25-20, 25-17 win over Special Operations, and a 25-19, 25-18 victory over the Army saw the Marines continue their undefeated streak in the sitting volleyball event.

The Marines will take on the Navy in the gold medal decider after they also registered two wins today, seeing off the Army 25-19, 17-25, 15-12 and Air Force 26-24, 25-23.

The Army and the Air Force will play in the bronze-medal game tomorrow, while the Marines will face the Navy in the gold-medal game on Thursday (October 2).
