The 14-year-old received an impressive 42 per cent of the public vote following her efforts at the Swansea University International Sports Village during the IPC Athletics European Championships.

Lyle, who has cerebral palsy, overcame the likes of reigning world champion Oxana Corso to claim the T35 100 metre and 200m sprint double.

The youngster made her international debut back in February at the IPC Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai, where she smashed the T35 200m world record by over a second with her time of 31.01sec.

She then went on to improve this record to 30.71 and also broke the 100m world record with a time of 14.63.

The British sprinter finished ahead of another Italian on the IPC poll in the form of Federico Morlacchi, who claimed five European titles at the IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

Third place went to Britain's Lauren Steadman, who ended her compatriot Faye McClelland's dominance of the PT4 category at the ITU Para-Triathlon World Championships in Edmonton, Canada.

The other athletes shortlisted for the award were swimmers Chantalle Zijderveld of The Netherlands, American Ian Silverman and Andrew Mullen of Britain.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian swimmer Yevheniy Bohodayko was named the Allianz Athlete of the Month Best Male, and Italian equestrian rider Sara Morganti won Best Female.
