February 25 - The National Paralympic Committee of Zambia will hold elections on March 30 ©NPC ZambiaActing President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Zambia, George Gondwe, has declared his intention to seek election to the role on a full-time basis.

Gondwe had taken over the role of President after former Paralympian Lango Sinkamba stepped down last year.

Gondwe has been involved in Paralympic sport in Zambia for more than two decades and attended four Summer Games beginning with Atlanta 1996 when Zambia first competed.

The Zambian NPC was officially set up in 2005 and Gwonde has served as the organisation's vice-president since then.

"I have been in the disability sport for over 24 years and have served as NPC vice-president for over nine years," said Gondwe.

"The sports fraternity and Government can attest to my hard work and good leadership qualities."

The elections are set to take place during the Zambian NPC's Annual General Meeting on March 30 in Ndola and will see elections for President, vice-president, secretary general, treasurer and five committee member positions taking place.

Gondwe declared that only clubs and members in good standing with the NPC will have the right to vote and contest the elections.

"The NPC wants to usher in office credible leaders to run the affairs of the sport in the country, and to attain this, we are going to ensure all aspiring candidates are scrutinised," added Zambian NPC spokesman Clement Chanda.

Zambia is yet to claim a medal at a Paralympic Games, with only four athletes having represented the country since Sinkamba took part in Atlanta.

At Sydney 2000, Sinkamba was joined in the athletics events by Nancy Kalaba, while Lassam Katongo was the sole representative at Beijing 2008 before being joined at London 2012 by shot putter Rhodah Mutale.
