IPC logoNovember 10 - The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) are to countdown 2012's top 50 Paralympic moments.

The countdown kicks off on Monday (November 12) at www.Paralympic.org with 2012's last 50 days featuring a top Paralympic moment.

The year's best moment will be revealed on December 31.

Based on sport performance, emotional impact, media attraction and athletes' personal stories, half of the top moments were nominated by National Paralympic Committees and International Federations.

Nominations from the public are also being asked for by the IPC.

Of course, the highlight of the year will be 2012 Paralympic Games, held in London, and described by IPC President Sir Philip Craven as the best Games ever.

Sir Philip said: "The performances at London 2012 were certainly the peak of the year and showcased how far the Paralympic Movement has truly come in terms of athlete performance, spectator and viewing numbers and awareness of Paralympic sport.

"For me, the Games were truly amazing."

At those Games, opened by Britain's Queen and closed by Coldplay, Rihanna and Jay-Z, 4,237 athletes competed in 20 sports, with 75 of the 164 countries at the event taking home medals.

Research showed that the Games impacted British society significantly revealing that one in three UK adults changed their attitude towards people with impairment.

Eighty-one per cent of British adults also thought the Paralympics had a positive impact on the way people with impairment are viewed.

The welcomed renewal of the IPC-IOC Co-operation Agreement also meant that Olympics and Paralympics will be held in the same city through to 2020.

Winter sports were also in the limelight in 2012 with snowboarding added to the Paralympic Games and some great competition seen at the Nordic Skiing World Cup, and the Wheelchair Curling and Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships.
