The country has only hosted the Games once before, in 1968 when Mexico City was given the honour.

The Games were made famous by American athletes Tommy Smith and John Carlos, who both raised black-gloved fists during the 200 metres medal ceremony in a protest for Black Americans.

Gold medallist in the 200m breaststroke from these Games, and former President of the Mexican Olympic Committee, Felipe Muñoz, is part of the new group studying the nation's potential bid.

The Mexican city of Guadalajara was a bid city for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, but failed to be named as a Candidate City by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in February 2013.

The same city hosted the 2011 Pan American and Parapan American Games and is set to stage the 2017 World Aquatics Championships.

With these in mind, a potential bid for the 2024 Games is likely to centre around Guadalajara with a host of venues already in place in the city.

Mexico now joins a growing group of countries that have declared an interest in hosting the 2024 Games with the United States, France, Italy and South Africa other potential bidders.

A host city for the 2024 Games is due to be selected by the IOC in 2017.
