The announcement, made just hours before the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Winter Games here, is because Russia is too busy holding a multitude of other sporting events over the next five years.

This comes after reports that several Russian cities were planning bids for 2024.

Igor Sivor, deputy general manager of the Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade, told insidethegames last year that discussions for Kazan to launch a bid were underway and depended on the success of Sochi 2014.

Similarly, as the Sochi 2014 Torch Relay swept through the city in October, St Petersburg mayor Georgy Poltavchenko, announced they were "looking at the question" of the city launching a bid.

But Mutko has now seemingly ended any prospects when he said there is "no talk of a bid for a new Olympics at the moment".

He added: "We are all busy until 2019 in the good sense of the word, we have so many major events in the country".

In 2013, Russia hosted the Summer Universiade in Kazan and the World Athletics Championships in Moscow, ahead of the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Sochi this winter.

Kazan will also host the World Aquatics Championships in 2015, while the World Championships in fencing were awarded to Kazan for 2014 and Moscow for 2015.

In 2016 Russia will host the Ice Hockey World Championships before the FIFA World Cup in 2018, and then the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk.

This announcement narrows down a still fairly large list of potential candidates for 2024 - with Paris and several cities in the United States currently the leading candidates.

With Toronto in Canada abandoning their plans last month, among others reportedly still considering bids are Durban, Doha and Rome.

The contest will not officially get underway until 2015, with the final decision to be made by the International Olympic Committee two years later.
