Canon have been announced as the latest gold sponsor of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic GamesJapanese giants Canon have today been announced as the latest gold sponsor of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Canon follow Asahi Brewers and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Corporation as top-tier sponsors for the Games, scheduled to take place between July 24 and August 9, and they have been designated as the official "Still Cameras and Desktop Reprographic Hardware" provider.

"It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee has concluded a Gold Partner contract with Canon," Tokyo 2020 President Yoshirō Mori said.

"Canon's state-of-the-art still cameras and desktop reprographic hardware, including desktop printers, will capture and reproduce breathtaking images of the world's leading athletes in full flight and record these for posterity.

"They will play a crucial role in communicating the wonder and inspiration of the Tokyo 2020 Games."

The addition of Canon, widely regarded as the most-well known imaging and optical companies, further strengthens the commercial repertoire of Tokyo 2020.

The Organising Committee of the Games are reportedly charging JPY¥15 billion (£80 million/$128 million/€110 million) to become a gold sponsor as they bid to generate at least JPY¥150 billion (£840 million/€1.3 billion/$1.1 billion) in revenue from the scheme.

Local sponsors for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games are split into three categories, with gold being the highest, followed by Official Partner and Official Supporter.

"We are delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to the successful delivery of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games as the Tokyo 2020 Gold Partner in the category of Still Cameras and Desktop Reprographic Hardware," Canon chairman and chief executive Fujio Mitarai said.

"Based on the key concept of 'capturing the most pivotal moments of the Games and sharing these emotions,' Canon will fully support the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Japanese national teams.

"We look forward to providing world-class services to professional photographers from around the world who will gather in Japan to capture breathtaking images of the historical performances of the world's top athletes."
