Pupils from 31 schools are getting involved in the Rio 2016 Education Programme.

The three-part challenge makes up what organisers call the "Values Marathon" - intended to "integrate the participating schools through collective activities".

With more than 70,000 people having applied for the 70,000 volunteering places at the Olympic and Paralympic Games since registration opened last month, the children have been getting into the spirit of doing something for nothing.

Students at Orestes Barbosa in Rio de Janeiro donated more than 200 centimetres of hair to be made into wigs by the Pink Ribbon Foundations, which does volunteer work to prevent breast cancer.

The pupils decided to help the Foundation after 16-year-old peer Gabriele Costa died in July from leukaemia.

"We were thinking about doing something about an issue that has been a major challenge for humanity and about how we could help people who suffer from this disease," said the students in a joint statement.

Youngsters from Doutor Sócrates School renovated a garden for older people and children, staged a play and collected food for a shelter, while Luiz Delfino Municipal School pupils and teachers led a group clean-up of Parque da Cidade and made posters to raise awareness about the importance of the environment and its preservation.
