FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament draws made
Thursday, 16 February 2012
February 18 - The draw for the women's FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament has been made in Ankara, Turkey, with the hosts drawn with Japan and Puerto Rico in Group A.
Turkey will fancy their chances having won silver at the 2011 EuroBasket tournament in Poland.
Argentina, who were runners up at last year's Americas tournament, will have a tough task against the Czech Republic (pictured below), who finished fourth at the EuroBasket and Oceania's second best side New Zealand in Group B.
South Korea may be favourites for Group C having not failed to qualify for an Olympic Games since Barcelona 1992.
They will face Croatia and Mozambique, who replaced Senegal after they opted not to send a team to the qualifiers.
Eurobasket bronze medallists France will also fancy their chances against Canada and Mali in Group D.
The tournament will take place from 25 June to July 1 in the Turkish capital.
Following the group stage, the top two teams in each will go through to the quarter finals, with the winners of each last eight tie booking their place in London.
The four losing quarter finalists will then be paired off, with the winners of those two games going forward to a final and the chance to win the last spot at London 2012.
Britain, the United States, Russia, China, Australia, Brazil and Angola have already qualified for this summer's Olympics.
The United States have won the last four Olympic Games and are strong favourites for glory again this summer.
