London 2012_athletes_waiting_for_busDecember 21 - Transport for London (TfL) has used the West End's busiest Christmas shopping days this month to demonstrate that although the city will be very crowded during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it will be very much open for business just as it is now.

A series of pictures taken near Bond Street tube station, which will be a transport hotspot during next summer's Games, show athletes in incongruous situations such as queuing for a bus or sprinting across traffic crossings.

The images demonstrate that although parts of London will be very busy at certain times and in some locations next summer, just as they are this Christmas, plans are in place to ensure that the English capital does not grind to a standstill.

"London is an exciting, busy place to be in the run up to Christmas and we expect the 2012 Games to transform the capital in a very similar way," said the Director of Games Transport at TfL Mark Evers

"London will be busier than usual, just as it is during the festive period, but it will be very much open for business.

"We've been working with businesses for many months now, and from early next year will start communicating directly with Londoners on how to avoid travel hotspots and make the most of all the Games have to offer.

"We're confident that Londoners and visitors to the city will join in the excitement of the biggest sporting event on the planet and enjoy a wealth of cultural events taking place all over the city."

Around 12 million journeys a day are made on London's public transport network, and on the busiest days of the Games, up to three million additional journeys will be made in the capital.

Just as at Christmas, the transport network will be very busy but TfL are confident that the capital will keep moving and that Londoners and visitors alike will enjoy the atmosphere and make the most of all the Games have to offer.
