Beach_volleyball_test_event_starts_August_9_2011August 9 - London 2012 organisers modified the schedule for today's beach volleyball test event at Horse Guards Parade so athletes and spectators were not out after dark as violent riots rage across the city.

London is bracing for a fourth night of violence which has already resulted in vehicles and buildings being destroyed by fire, extensive damage to property and looting.

The Visa FIVB Beach Volleyball International, attended by teams from around the globe, began on today and was meant to have play continue until 10pm each day.

Organisers changed scheduling so that play would be complete by 7.15pm tonight.

"We will do whatever to not even risk putting in danger anybody here," said Angelo Squeo, the event director.

"They put in place a shortened schedule today because they want everyone back at their hotels before dark while the riots are going on," Australian athlete Natalie Cook said after she and partner Tamsin Hinchley won the opening round of competition.

"It's unfortunate, the timing is unfortunate but hopefully the police can get on top of it soon.

"In the meantime, we are just following recommendations: using the event transport and staying in our hotel after dark."

Most of the competitors enjoyed the event despite the tense atmosphere around the capital.

"This is a very beautiful location and the fans were very supportive," said Mexican Bibiana Candelas.

She was supported by And Brazilian Taiana Lima.

"The organisation is great and the crowd have been very good," she said.

The event is due to finish on Sunday (August 14).
