149764197August 15- Cyclists will be able to take advantage of "the world's best cycling venue" from March next year when the home of the Velodrome and BMX track used at London 2012 opens its doors to the public here in just over six months' time.

The centre will boast floodlit road cycling tracks and five miles of mountain track, as well as the existing Velodrome, which hosted Britain's record-breaking medal haul at the Games, and a re-vamped and floodlit version of the BMX course from London 2012.

Sessions will be available from March 4 next year with varied programmes including learn to ride programmes for children and programmes tailored for those with additional needs.

The opening programme will include the first major event to take place on the Velodrome,  the finale of the Revolution elite track cycling series, which will come to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on March 14 and 15 next year, after being held at Glasgow's Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome earlier this year.

Visitors will be able to hire out equipment or bring their own along to use on the facilities, and an on-site bike workshop and cafe will be open from 7am to 11pm seven days a week.

Lee Valley Country Park Authority chief executive Shaun Dawson was here today to unveil the ambitious programme for Lee Valley VeloPark.

"We will have a packed, buzzing programme, which has been developed following extensive consultations with the sport's National Governing Body, British Cycling, local clubs and cycling groups, and these will take place all day, every day across four cycling disciplines with a huge variety of sessions for people at all levels of cycling," he said.

"No cycling venue in the world has bought these four cycling disciplines together.

"For people who have never ridden a bike, to those who are setting world records, these unparalleled facilities will deliver the Olympic promise of inspiring a generation."

Schools sessions on the BMX, mountain and road courses and the velodrome will start from £4 ($6.20/€4.70) per pupil, whilst club riders will be able to use the road track from £2 ($3.10/€2.30), the BMX and mountain tracks from £3.30 ($5.15/€3.90 and the velodrome from £4.

Childrens and concessions will be charged from £4 for the BMX, mountain and road tracks and from £9 ($14/€10.50) for the velodrome, whilst adult prices start at £6 ($9.30/€7) for the circuits and £12 ($18.70/€14) for the velodrome for one hour drop in sessions.

"Our ethos is to run venues that are community focused and commercially driven, and we have hit the right note of balancing affordable pricing for children, young people, clubs and other groups with income from corporate hires and commercial events- the first of which will be the finale to the Revolution track cycling series in March," said Dawson.

"Clubs could pay as little as £2 a head to race on a brand new one mile floodlit road circuit and schools £4 a pupil to use the iconic velodrome and be coached on the same track where Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton, Laura Trott and Dame Sarah Storey romped home for Team GB and Paralympics GB last summer."

"The Velodrome was the scene of some of the most memorable moments and greatest triumphs of London 2012, and one of its most iconic venues," added London Legacy Development Corporation chief executive Dennis Hone.

"All across the Park the venues of the Games are being converted for community through to elite use as we continue our work to transform it into an amazing new visitor attraction and a Park for local people with vibrant neighbourhoods.

"With 12,500 people visiting the north parklands in the first week, the Copper Box Arena opening for major events and as a leisure facility, we are now on track to deliver a facility unlike any other, hosting world class international cycling events."

The velodrome is currently in the running to host the 2016 International Cycling Union (UCI) Track Cycling World Championships, and is due to learn its fate in the "next few months", according to Dawson.

Bookings for use of facilities at the venue will begin to be taken later this year.
