Named after His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice-president and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, the award was launched in 2009 and is designed to make the United Arab Emirates a global hub for sport creativity, leadership and excellence.

A top prize of $250,000 (£150,000/€182,000) is handed out to winners in three separate categories: UAE, Arab and International.

Organisers also claim that 23 of the 26 members of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) have applied for the award in the past two years, with 203 nominations received in 2013.

Secretary general of the Dubai Sports Council, Dr Ahmed Al Sharif, was joined at today's launch by a number of officials from the Board of Trustees of the award, including chairman of the Technical Committee, Dr Khalifa Al Shaali.
