Construction is running slightly behind schedule on the Toronto 2015 Velodrome in the town of Milton 50km to the west of the host city ©WikipediaTwo track cycling test events for next summer's Pan American Games scheduled for next month have been postponed due to delays in the final stages of construction for the Toronto 2015 Velodrome, the only such indoor facility in the country.

In a statement released by Cycling Canada, it is explained that completing preparations is "taking a bit longer than originally planned", because constructing the Velodrome is "incredibly detailed work and the conditions required to install the track need to be absolutely perfect".

As a consequence, the test events, consisting of the Milton International Challenge from October 16 to 25 and the Track Nationals from October 22 to 25, have both been postponed and are now expected to take place early in 2015.

The statement added: "Out of respect for the need for both Canadian riders and international teams to be able to plan their schedules and make the necessary travel and other logistical arrangements, it is necessary to make this difficult decision at this time".

"We are working with all stakeholders and the UCI (International Cycling Union) on a January 2015 date.

"Exact dates and details surrounding the event schedule are being worked on and will be communicated to all parties as soon as possible.

"This postponement does not alleviate the important timelines associated with finishing the Velodrome and the hosting of a test event, but it does allow for the careful, diligent installation of the track and key ancillary spaces in a less pressure filled situation, thereby ensuring the complete legacy value of the Milton Velodrome."

To accommodate this change the town of Milton is adjusting its autumn cycling programmes and will be moving the opening day community event from November 1 to November 29.

The Velodrome is a major commitment for Milton, a town of just over 80,000 residents 50 kilometres to the west of Toronto, with the facility due to become a legacy cycling centre after the Games, taking place from July 10 until 26 next year.

"The Velodrome is a very unique project and it's important to take the time to get it right," said Milton Mayor, Gord Krantz.

"Having to push our programmes head by a few weeks isn't ideal, but it's certainly not going to dampen the community's enthusiasm about this one-of-a-kind facility.

"When the doors open, I have no doubt that it will be worth the wait."
