Following a meeting of the EOC Executive Board, held at the new Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) headquarters near the Palace Hotel, Spyros Capralos, chairman of the EOC Coordination Commission for the Games, said the programme would consist of three events: men's and women's pole vault and men's high jump.

Capralos, who is also President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, said the intention was to bring the top eight athletes from each event to a striking downtown venue on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

The final turnout will depend on the agreement of contracts with the athletes in question.

The disclosure appears to spell the end of efforts to include street running races, using a temporary track, on the Baku schedule, which runs from June 12 to 28.

Questioned directly in Lausanne, EOC officials confirmed that the street athletics programme at Baku would not include running.

France's Lavillenie emerged last year as an out-and-out star of world athletics after breaking Sergey Bubka's 21-year-old world record with a clearance of 6.16 metres in the Ukrainian's home city of Donetsk.
