January 11 - The Qatar Paralympic Committee have been given QR500,000 (£85,500) by ExxonMobil to help fund an outreach programme in the country.

Dr Hassan Mohammed Al Ansari, the general secretary of the Qatar Paralympic Committee (QPC), received the donation at a special ceremony during the Qatar ExxonMobil Open tennis event in Doha.

The cheque was presented by Alex Dodds, the President and general manager of ExxonMobil Qatar.

Dodds said: "ExxonMobil makes positive contributions to the countries in which we operate because we strongly believe community support is the key cornerstone to building a prosperous future.

“We consider our community relationships an essential element of our business.

"As a result ExxonMobil has continued to support the Qatar Paralympic Committee’s work with athletes with special needs in Qatar."

Al Ansari praised ExxonMobil Qatar for its continued support toward the QPC's activities, and on the continued relationship which the two have enjoyed.

Last year, ExxonMobil Qatar sponsored several activities and events of the QPC athletics team and have promised further help in 2010.

Al Ansari said: "ExxonMobil’s sponsorship will assist in preparing and training the team in anticipation of forthcoming regional and international competitions.

“Most recently, ExxonMobil sponsored the Qatar Paralympic Team’s participation in the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation World Games tournament held last year at Bangalore, India where the Qatari team brought home seven medals."
