World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue has praised the impact of the governing body's inaugural Medical Conference.

The Conference took place alongside this year's World Championships in Muju in South Korea in June and featured six presentations.

Dr Paul Viscogliosi, the chairman of World Taekwondo's Medical and Anti-Doping Committee, discussed trauma evolution in the sport.

A presentation on taekwondo injuries outside of competition was given by Dr Hassan Kamal, a member of the Medical and Anti-Doping Committee, while Professor Sae-yong Lee of the Yonsei Institute of Sport Science and Exercise Medicine gave a talk on taekwondo injuries at the past three Olympic Games.

Professor Dae Hyoun Jeong of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine then presented on "point-of-care ultrasound for injured athletes in taekwondo competition".

Marco Ienna, World Taekwondo's anti-doping coordinator, spoke on the battle against drugs in sport while the governing body's sport department presented on injury management procedures during competitions.

The Conference was concluded by a question and answer session.

"What differentiates taekwondo from some traditional martial arts is that we have done away with secrets and superstitions," said Choue.

"Instead, we have embraced modern science and medicine.

"The conference provides a sound basis on which to build further efforts aimed at reducing and managing injuries in taekwondo, a dynamic and challenging combat sport."

World Taekwondo analysed and recorded all injuries which occurred during competition in Muju.

This will allow for further analysis and the improvement of injury prevention programmes.
