Olympic champions Argentina claimed a comfortable 6-0 win over the United States on the opening day of the men's Pan American Hockey Cup in Lancaster in Pennsylvania.

The South Americans have 11 players from the team that defeated Belgium to win the gold medal at Rio 2016 in their squad for this tournament being held at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex.

Their quality shone through as Matías Paredes and Gonzalo Merino both scored twice while Gonzalo Peillat and Juan Gilardi also scored for the Argentinians to record a 6-0 thrashing that moves them to the top of the Pool A standings.

Chile join them at the top of Pool A after they also recorded a 6-0 victory over Venezuela.

Martin Rodriguez, Franco Becerra and Jose Hurtado all scored twice.

In Pool B, Canada defeated Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 in their opening match as they celebrated goal keeper David Carter's 150th match.

Scott Tupper, Gordon Johnston, Iain Smythe and Matthew Saramento all found the net for Canada.

Brazil find themselves at the top of Pool B after recording a 3-1 win over Mexico in their first match.

Strikes from Joaquin Lopez and Stephane Smith put Brazil 2-0 up before Irvin Chavez pulled one back for Mexico on 57 minutes.

Just two minutes later, Lucas Paixao added a third for the Brazilians to seal victory.

This year’s event marks the first time that the US has hosted Pan American Cup.

Another first is the fact that it will be a dual-gender Pan American Cup, with men's and women’s matches taking place on alternate days.

The women’s event is scheduled to get underway tomorrow with Argentina and the US among the favourites for success.
