Men's top seed Wang Tzu-wei continued his progression at the Badminton World Federation New Zealand Open by reaching the quarter-finals.

The Chinese Taipei player was a comfortable winner in the third round at the North Shore Events Centre in Auckland, seeing off Malaysian opponent Chong Wei Feng 21-15, 21-10.

Wang has booked a last-eight showdown with Australia's unseeded hopeful Anthony Joe, who knocked out another Malaysian in Soh Wooi Yik.

Joe needed three games before eventually prevailing 21-17, 18-21, 21-14.

After Wang, the next-highest seed left in is India's fourth ranked Prannoy Kumar who edged through in two tight games.

He eventually proved too strong for Hong Kong's Wei Nan, winning 21-18, 21-19.

In the women's competition, Thailand's top seed Ratchanok Intanon steamrolled her way into the quarter-finals by winning her second round clash.

The former world number one overpowered Australia's Jiang Yingzi 21-2, 21-8.

Indonesian second seed Fitriani also progressed thanks to a 21-7, 21-15 win over Canada's five-time Pan-American champion Brittney Tam.

Home interest was ended as the last New Zealand player in either singles draw, Christine Zhang, was knocked out 21-14, 21-7 by Dinar Dyah Ayustine of Indonesia.

The quarter-finals at the Grand Prix Gold level event will be played tomorrow.
