AIBA President C K Wu says he is confident the 2017 Men’s World Championships in Hamburg will be one of the best ever ©AIBA

International Boxing Association (AIBA) President C K Wu claimed he is confident the 2017 Men’s World Championships in Hamburg will be one of the best ever, but admitted the well-documented institutional situation surrounding the organisation could have an impact on the event.

The World Championships are scheduled to take place in the German city from August 25 to September 2.

But, with just over three weeks until they begin, there remains a dispute over who should run AIBA during the next three months.

Wu claimed he has retained control of the world governing body but his rivals contest this and insist they have power.

The Interim Management Committee (IMC) was set up last week after 13 out of 15 members of AIBA's Executive Committee attempted a vote of no confidence against Wu during a meeting in Moscow.

They have filed a case in the Swiss courts asking that they be given control of AIBA until at least the Extraordinary General Assembly, expected to take place in November.

A decision is expected either today or tomorrow.

Wu remained upbeat about preparations for the World Championships.

"The World Championships are the AIBA major competition and our staff have been working very close with the Local Organising Committee for more than six months to ensure the highest standards for this event," he said.

"It is true that the current institutional situation can have an impact on the competition and the recent proceedings initiated by some elected members have definitely not put the boxers first.

"But I’m confident that with the hard work done by the AIBA staff and local organisers, we will see one of the best World Championships ever.

"The traditional boxing city of Hamburg will see the best 280 boxers in the world competing across nine days of boxing action.

"This is the DNA of the AIBA family; to develop and provide the best opportunities for our athletes.

"Sport will always come first and Hamburg will be a great celebration of the noble art."

AIBA’s offices re-opened in Lausanne yesterday after being closed for a week.

Wu told Agence France-Presse (AFP) both he and the staff are back at work with the main focus being to continue preparations for the World Championships.

The 70-year-old Taiwanese claimed that he had nothing to fear from the courts.

In June, German car manufacturer Borgward become the main sponsor of the 2017 World Championships.

It followed the announcement that same month of a deal with global sports giant Adidas to become the official sponsor of the event.

"We are delighted to partner with prestigious global brands like Borgward and Adidas in Hamburg 2017," Wu said.

"As I’ve already said before, the World Championships are special for us and having these sponsors on board reaffirms our intention to escalate the level and the quality of our major competition.

"Our operational team has been working closely with all the brands to ensure a good cooperation and I’m confident that both parties will be very pleased after the event, opening new doors for our marketing position in the next four-year cycle."

The Oceania Boxing Confederation Boxing Championships, held in June, was the last of five continental events that served as direct qualification routes to the 2017 World Championships.

"The Hamburg 2017 World Boxing Championships are going to be one of the key sport events of the summer," Wu added.

"After the challenging qualification path with five Continental Championships, only the best boxers will be competing to be crowned world champion.

"This means that the attraction of the sport side is ensured and fans will be able to enjoy the best boxing action in the world.

"But at the same time, we will offer for the first time ever a completely new fan experience on site and on our AIBA digital channels.

"The boxing fans in Hamburg will enjoy an extensive fan zone experience, including different spaces dedicated to the AIBA Year of Africa, a commentary challenge and all different activities from our sponsors.
